What Is Involved in Repatriating Human Remains?
• Register the death with the local authorities abroad within 5 to 8 days
• Obtain an English translation of the death certificate
• Secure permission to remove the body from the country of death
• Notify a UK coroner if the death was violent or unnatural On arrival in the UK, you must present the death certificate to the local register office. A certificate of no liability to register will then be issued for funeral arrangements.
When repatriating human remains in the form of ashes, you typically need a death certificate and a certificate of cremation. Each country may have additional rules. Airlines may request ashes to be transported in non-metallic containers for X-ray screening.
